Lewis Hall punished a Hull City error to extend Newcastle's lead in a 2-1 defeat at St James' Park. The result leaves the Tigers fifth in the Premier League with eight points from their opening four games, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
Harvey Barnes was the architect for both Newcastle goals, setting up Joe Willock after just three minutes. Hall doubled the advantage four minutes later, finishing clinically after Hull lost possession in a dangerous area. Mohamed Ali Cho pulled one back for the visitors midway through the second half, assisted by Mohamed Belloumi, but a comeback was not completed.
Costly mistake proves decisive
The early concession of a second goal, stemming directly from a turnover, left Hull with a steep mountain to climb. Manager Liam Rosenior told reporters his side's performance deserved more than a defeat, pointing to the positive response after going two goals down. He said the team showed great character to fight back into the game and create chances, but the initial errors were too costly against a top side.
Hull's recent form has been mixed, with one win, two draws and two losses in their last five outings. The sequence includes a creditable 2-2 draw at Chelsea and a narrow 1-0 loss to Sunderland. You can review the full run of recent results on our fixtures page.
Injury list remains a concern
Rosenior continues to manage a significant injury list at the MKM Stadium. Goalkeeper Jack Butland, midfielders Hidemasa Morita and Darko Gyabi, and forwards Charlie Hughes and Ilyas Ansah are all currently sidelined. The absence of these key figures has tested the squad's depth in the early stages of the campaign.
Despite the setbacks, Belloumi has emerged as a bright spot, leading the team's scoring charts with two goals this season. His creativity was on show again for Cho's consolation at Newcastle. The team's overall defensive record remains solid, having conceded just two goals in four league matches, a foundation they will look to build upon.
Hull now turn their attention to a home fixture against Everton on October 11. Sean Dyche's side currently sit ninth in the table, setting up another challenging Premier League encounter at the MKM Stadium.

Head coach Sergej Jakirovic told reporters he was proud of his side's second-half performance but admitted the game was lost in the first 10 minutes. "We lost this game in the first half - we were poor," said Jakirovic. "We made two mistakes and they punished us with their quality." The defeat ends Hull's unbeaten start to the Premier League season. The club's league standing is now seventh, with eight points from five games.
