Hull City, newly promoted, secured a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored the goals that handed the newcomers a decisive victory in the opening match of the season.
Shearer's Critique
On BBC’s Match of the Day, former England striker Alan Shearer described the Red Devils’ performance as “dreadful in all positions, particularly upfront”. He added that the team “offered nothing” and that “there was a lack of energy, they just didn’t look fit”. Shearer said the lack of intensity was evident from the first minute and that only Hull City displayed the energy needed to win.
Carrick's Response
Michael Carrick, in his first permanent match as Manchester United manager, remained calm after the loss. He noted that the club had not lost many games in the past six to seven months and that a single defeat does not mean everything is wrong. Carrick acknowledged issues against different systems but stressed that the team had done “a lot of good things” and that the loss should not be over-interpreted.
The defeat at Hull was Carrick’s first game in charge after taking over permanently following Ruben Amorim’s sacking. Shearer’s comments have added pressure on the new manager as United look to recover from the opening-day setback.
